Haemochromatosis: does therapeutic blood donation replace medical follow-up?

Venesection treats iron overload. When therapeutic donation is possible, donor screening and monitoring the disease remain different tasks.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

In confirmed HFE1 haemochromatosis, venesection may treat iron overload. An isolated high ferritin result is not itself a prescription for blood removal.

Treatment includes a phase to reduce overload and maintenance to prevent it returning. The doctor adapts timing to test results and tolerance.

Monitoring includes ferritin and haemoglobin. Keep sampling dates, prescribed volumes and any faintness in the record shared with the care team.

Therapeutic blood donation may be considered when donor eligibility criteria are met. Some diseases or medicines can prevent donation despite an indication for venesection.

Tests during donation protect recipients of the collected blood. They do not replace the haemochromatosis blood monitoring organised by your doctor.

Ask who prescribes venesection, who checks results and where treatment will occur. Report fatigue or dizziness so tolerance can be reassessed without changing the programme yourself.
