Suspected piles: why should rectal bleeding be examined?

First or repeated rectal bleeding needs medical assessment. Using a cream cannot confirm where the blood comes from.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

First or recurring rectal bleeding warrants a medical appointment, even if you think you recognise symptoms of piles.

The doctor examines the anal area. Other causes must be considered before attributing bleeding to piles; further tests may be needed.

Very black stools, substantial repeated bleeding, or severe anal pain with fever need medical advice as soon as possible.

After piles have been diagnosed, avoid straining hard and sitting on the toilet for a long time. Constipation also needs attention.

Local treatments relieve symptoms but do not establish their cause. Ask a pharmacist and do not prolong their use without advice.

Seek another assessment if symptoms persist despite care. Mon bilan prévention does not replace examination of bleeding or new pain.
