General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Hepatitis A is an acute liver infection spread mainly through the faecal–oral route. It does not become chronic, although some cases can be severe.

A person can pass the virus on before jaundice appears. Young children often have few visible signs; absence of symptoms does not exclude transmission.

Diagnosis relies on prescribed blood testing. Once diagnosed, contact the doctor promptly to arrange advice for people close to the affected person.

Vaccination of close contacts may be recommended depending on circumstances and time since the patient's symptoms began. Have this possibility assessed promptly.

Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing meals. Increase bathroom cleaning and follow any exclusion instructions received.

During the infectious period, avoid preparing food for other people. Ask about dates applying to your situation and instructions for school or work.
