Autoimmune hepatitis: why continue follow-up in remission?

Improved blood tests do not mean you should stop treatment yourself. The specialist monitors the condition, its treatment and their progress.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Autoimmune hepatitis is inflammation of the liver requiring specialist follow-up. Its presentation and severity vary, so treatment is discussed according to each person’s assessment.

Treatment may include corticosteroids followed by maintenance immunosuppression, such as azathioprine. The aim is to control inflammation and reduce relapse.

Biochemical response includes normalisation of liver enzymes and immunoglobulin G. Normal blood tests do not always guarantee that inflammation in the liver has completely resolved.

Before considering withdrawal of long-term treatment, a liver biopsy may be discussed to look for persistent inflammation. The specialist makes the decision and timing with you.

Follow-up also checks for treatment side effects. Appointments and blood tests are adjusted to progress; a treatment change requires specialist assessment.

Bring your results and medication list to the appointment. Report troublesome effects or difficulty taking medicines and ask about your next check; do not reduce or stop an immunosuppressant on your own.
