Chronic hepatitis B: does an undetectable virus mean follow-up can stop?

Treatment can control viral replication without eliminating the virus. Viral load, liver damage and treatment tolerance still need monitoring.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Chronic hepatitis B needs follow-up even without noticeable discomfort. The usual doctor and specialist coordinate consultations and investigations together.

Not everyone requires the same treatment. Decisions depend particularly on viral activity and the severity or progression of liver damage.

Antivirals aim to make viral replication very low or undetectable. Suppression does not mean permanent elimination of the virus or disappearance of every liver lesion.

Monitoring measures viral activity, inflammation and liver damage. During treatment, it also checks effectiveness and tolerance; report difficulties taking medicine.

Avoid new medicines without medical advice and discuss troublesome effects before changing doses. Some products can worsen liver injury.

Have relevant close contacts tested and discuss vaccination if they are not immune. Do not share items that may carry blood, such as razors or nail clippers.
