Hepatitis B at work: prepare to have your vaccination status checked

A job or placement may involve exposure to blood or biological materials. Prepare your records for an appropriate professional assessment.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Will a new job or placement involve handling blood, samples or biological waste? Checking your hepatitis B status is something to arrange before starting that activity, rather than leaving the question unresolved.

The virus affects the liver and can be transmitted through blood. Depending on the activity and exposure, vaccination may be recommended or an immunisation requirement may apply, including in certain healthcare professions and training programmes.

Find your vaccination record and any available medical documents. Write down the dates you actually know, without treating a recollection as proof, and ask which evidence is relevant to your own circumstances.

Your usual doctor or occupational physician can assess your history and exposure. A note saying “vaccinated” does not, by itself, establish that the particular requirements of a job have been met.

An accidental needlestick or splash onto a mucous membrane needs a different response: report the accident and obtain a prompt medical assessment. Do not wait for a prevention conversation to have the exposure assessed.

Outside an accident, you can prepare general questions for a prevention conversation. The Mon bilan prévention page explains its conditions; this is separate from the process of obtaining any required occupational certification.

Flu and Covid-19: the 2026–2027 campaign

The national flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign starts on 13 October 2026. In Doctolib, choose “Vaccination antigrippale (Grippe)” or “Vaccination COVID-19” for the vaccination you want to discuss.

Bring your carte Vitale and, for flu, your coverage voucher if you have one. The professional checks the recommendations and coverage conditions that apply to you.

The pharmacy checks whether vaccination and coverage apply based on the vaccine, your age and your circumstances.
