General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

After an operation, immediately call 15 or 112 in France for chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, feeling faint with or without loss of consciousness, or a very fast heartbeat. Also call 15 or 112 immediately for mottled skin, blue lips or fingers, cold hands and feet or a drop in blood pressure. These symptoms may suggest pulmonary embolism; pain can be mild or breathlessness progressive.

Outside the emergency signs above, tell your doctor or surgeon about any abnormal postoperative symptom: fever, groin pain, redness, warmth, pain or swelling at the operated site, or discharge from the scar.

Also report bruising, loss of feeling at the operated site or testicles, fluid accumulation and calf pain. Calf pain can suggest a blood clot and needs prompt assessment.

Some problems appear later: persistent pain, prolonged redness, swelling or warmth, fluid that does not go away, fever or scar discharge, or a new lump where the hernia was. Tell your doctor even long after surgery.

Resume activities gradually according to your tolerance and the technique used. Ameli advises against driving and carrying loads for seven days; ask for instructions specific to your operation.

The date for returning to sport is agreed with your doctor. Returning to work depends on the technique and physical demands: describe your tasks to get a suitable schedule rather than copying another person’s.
