General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Chronic hydrocephalus disturbs cerebrospinal-fluid circulation or absorption. Walking, continence and cognitive functions may be affected.
CT or MRI may show enlarged ventricles. Images must be considered alongside symptoms and examination.
Temporarily removing fluid by lumbar puncture may help assessment. Lack of improvement alone does not exclude the diagnosis.
Some centres also measure fluid pressure and circulation. Ask what the test is intended to clarify.
If a shunt is offered, a valve regulates drainage. Walking benefits most consistently; memory improvement is less certain.
Adjustments may be needed afterwards, particularly after some MRI examinations. Tell staff about the valve and keep monitoring instructions.
