Hands can carry microbes to objects and the face. Washing them helps reduce transmission throughout the year, without offering complete protection against infection.
Wash before preparing food or eating, after using the toilet, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, and after public transport. Wash both before and after caring for a baby.
With water and soap, rub for at least thirty seconds. Cover the palms, backs of the hands, spaces between fingers, thumbs, fingertips and nails.
After washing, dry your hands with a clean towel or let them air dry. Keep this final step in your usual handwashing routine.
When water and soap are unavailable, an alcohol-based hand rub is an option only if hands are not visibly dirty. Rub for thirty seconds. It disinfects but does not wash, so regular washing remains necessary.
