General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Weight loss with an unchanged appetite, difficulty tolerating heat or a fine hand tremor can suggest an overactive thyroid. These signs warrant medical assessment.

Symptoms vary between people and can be subtle at first. Prepare their onset dates, changes in weight, and any changes in heat tolerance or tremor.

Mention your own and your family’s history of thyroid conditions, along with the medicines you take. Certain medicines are among the circumstances in which a doctor investigates an overactive thyroid.

Assessment includes a medical examination and blood tests. TSH is low in hyperthyroidism; free T4 is measured as a second step when TSH is low.

Thyroid ultrasound is not required in every case: its usefulness depends, among other things, on the neck examination and the suspected cause. An endocrinologist may help complete the assessment.

Ask how the findings and follow-up will be explained. If palpitations occur with warning signs such as feeling faint or fainting, chest pain or difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical care or call 15 or 112 in France.
