General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Diagnostic hysteroscopy examines the inside of the uterus with a fine camera introduced through the cervix. It may be offered to investigate an abnormality of the cavity or during a fertility assessment, depending on the situation.
At Nancy University Hospital this diagnostic examination is usually performed in consultation without anaesthesia. Passing through the cervix may cause discomfort. Ask your team what is planned for you and report any pain.
Operative hysteroscopy has a different purpose: it can remove some small polyps or fibroids. If an intervention is planned, ask about the procedure, its benefits, risks and the arrangements for anaesthesia.
Before any gynaecological examination, the professional asks for your consent. You can ask questions and express agreement or refusal; clarify whether a sample is planned and how it will be analysed.
After the examination, seek urgent care or call 15 in France for bleeding with fever, heavy bleeding with faintness or marked weakness, or bleeding with pelvic pain after a missed period if you are of childbearing age. Also report any fever, severe pain or prolonged bleeding after the procedure to your doctor.
Ask how you will receive the report and, if a sample was taken, its results. The prescriber can explain what the observations mean in your assessment and which next steps fit your situation.
