General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
For severe to profound hearing loss that has already been investigated, a cochlear implant may be discussed when conventional hearing aids provide little speech understanding. The feeling of hearing poorly alone cannot determine eligibility.
The implant converts sound into electrical signals sent to the auditory nerve. Part of the device is surgically placed in the inner ear; it is therefore more than a stronger hearing aid placed in the ear canal.
Specialist assessment considers hearing, communication and expectations. Medical examinations and imaging also establish whether surgery is possible; the team explains which investigations are needed in your circumstances.
Surgical placement and activation are separate stages. The external part is fitted after healing, followed by several adjustments. Confirm the timetable with the centre responsible for your care.
Speech and language rehabilitation is an integral part of the pathway. Learning to interpret new perceptions takes adaptation, with a duration that varies between people; implantation does not guarantee immediate understanding.
Before deciding, describe what you understand with your current hearing aids and your practical expectations. Ask who coordinates the assessment, adjustments and rehabilitation, and which appointments will be needed after surgery.
