General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

If you have slept poorly for several weeks, or troubled nights recur with fatigue, irritability or difficulty concentrating, make an appointment with your doctor.

Prepare a sleep diary: bedtime and waking time, night awakenings, how restful the night felt and daytime energy. Also record things that disturbed your sleep.

Explain when the problem began and how often it happens: difficulty falling asleep, waking at night or waking too early. Mention changes in routines or circumstances.

If you are tired or sleepy, do not drive and avoid dangerous machinery. An unusual tendency to fall asleep during the day also calls for medical advice.

Bring a list of your medicines and mention stimulants. If a treatment seems to make you sleepy, discuss it with your doctor without stopping it yourself.

Care takes account of possible causes and your circumstances. Medicines are not automatic; do not combine several sedating products on your own in an attempt to sleep better.
