General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Confirmed ACTH deficiency means that the pituitary does not produce enough ACTH, a hormone that directs cortisol production. Hydrocortisone replacement may then be needed. These points concern a diagnosis managed by an endocrine team.
Replacement treatment must not be interrupted. Infection or major stress can increase hydrocortisone requirements. Ask the team to write your personal adjustment instructions: this preparation should happen before a difficult situation arises.
If vomiting prevents you from taking tablets, seek urgent medical care: injectable hydrocortisone may be needed to prevent an adrenal crisis. Do not rely on the next routine follow-up appointment to resolve this problem.
Keep a card stating adrenal insufficiency and the name of the doctor responsible for your care. Ask the team to check useful information with you. The card communicates the diagnosis; it complements learning the actions and instructions.
Therapeutic education can teach management of emergencies and subcutaneous hydrocortisone injection. Ask for appropriate training, including a demonstration and a check of your understanding; an article does not replace this learning.
Before your next appointment, gather your card, prescription and existing instructions. Clarify the emergency contact and when each instruction applies. If someone helps you, ask how to involve them in the training.
