General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Abdominal pain with blood in stools, black stools or fever needs medical advice the same day. Sudden, very intense, stabbing pain is a reason to call 15 or 112 in France. A prevention appointment must not delay this care.
For an adult whose doctor has diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome, “functional” means a disorder of how the bowel works. Recurrent pain and changes in bowel habits are real, and their repetition can affect quality of life.
Several mechanisms are involved, including altered bowel contractions and increased intestinal sensitivity. Interactions between the brain and digestive tract also play a role. Stress can worsen symptoms, but this explanation does not reduce them to mere worry.
For the consultation, describe the pain, its relationship to meals or bowel movements, and changes in stool frequency or appearance. Also mention symptoms at night, weight loss and recent travel. The doctor considers these details alongside the examination to guide diagnosis.
In a typical presentation, the history and medical examination are often enough to establish the diagnosis. Further investigations are discussed when another condition needs to be considered, particularly with warning signs. Ask what the proposed investigation is meant to clarify in your situation.
After diagnosis, care aims to reduce symptoms and their impact, taking account of triggers and your concerns. Discuss dietary changes with the doctor or dietitian; combining restrictive diets on your own can cause nutritional deficiencies.
