Leg artery assessment: why compare ankle and arm blood pressure?

The ankle-brachial index is part of an arterial assessment. Understanding the measurement helps you prepare questions and keep useful results.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Muscle pain in a leg that starts while walking and eases with rest can accompany arterial disease. Describe what you notice on your usual journeys to the doctor; this symptom alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

The doctor may measure ankle blood pressure using Doppler and divide it by arm blood pressure. This ratio is called the ankle-brachial index, or IPS in French. Ask what the measurement contributes to your assessment rather than try to calculate it with a home blood pressure monitor.

The index is considered alongside symptoms, risk factors and examination of the legs. This assessment concerns circulation through arteries. Clarify questions about varicose veins or other venous problems with the professional so that the examinations are not confused.

An arterial Doppler ultrasound can add information about artery shape and blood flow. The doctor interprets the images, explains the result and provides a written report. Keep it for the referring doctor and later comparisons.

For a prescribed Doppler ultrasound, prepare the prescription, medicine list, doctor’s letter and any previous arterial examinations or surgery reports. Examples from your usual journeys can prepare the discussion; do not deliberately bring on pain to make your own measurement.

If you are being followed for arterial disease, promptly tell the doctor about an unusual or new symptom that concerns you. Stop an activity and seek medical advice if unusual leg pain occurs. Do not wait for the next index measurement to report the change.
