STI testing: timing, places and confidentiality

After possible exposure or before stopping condom use, ask about suitable tests, their timing and the conditions for anonymity.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A sexually transmitted infection can be present without visible signs. Unprotected or poorly protected sex, or plans to stop using condoms, can be reasons to seek testing.

Note the date of possible exposure and ask which test to use, when and whether to repeat it. A negative result obtained too early cannot exclude infection.

In a laboratory, Mon test IST provides access without a prescription or appointment for five infections. A questionnaire helps choose analyses and samples; different tests are not interchangeable.

Confidentiality and anonymity are different: your identity is recorded in this laboratory pathway. If you want anonymous testing, ask a CeGIDD screening centre about its arrangements before travelling there.

Ask about coverage according to age, the tests and your insurance situation. Patient charges may still apply: access without a prescription does not mean every test has no cost.

Clarify how you will receive results and whom to contact afterwards. Consult promptly after a positive result; symptoms also need medical advice, including before testing has taken place.
