General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
After an ovarian cyst is diagnosed, the next step depends on its type and any complications. Functional and organic cysts are managed differently; ask what the term in your report means.
A functional cyst without complications often needs no treatment. Follow-up ultrasound is prescribed to check disappearance after three menstrual cycles; confirm your individual timing with the doctor.
Ultrasound describes features including the size, contents and wall of the cyst. Changes help the doctor assess its nature: relief of discomfort alone does not replace the planned check.
A functional cyst that persists, grows or changes appearance may lead to discussion of surgery. An organic cyst needs specific management; do not extend watchful waiting on your own.
Sudden, severe pelvic pain requires urgent assessment, especially with nausea or vomiting. Torsion or rupture may be involved; even pain that subsequently eases does not rule out a complication.
Before leaving the appointment, ask for the follow-up date and who will compare the scans. Clarify how to send the result and what decision will follow if the cyst has not disappeared.
