Suspected Legionnaires’ disease: why describe places with water exposure?

Understand water aerosols and the regional health agency’s investigation without treating an exposure as a diagnosis.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Legionnaires’ disease is a lung infection caused by Legionella bacteria. Infection mainly occurs by breathing in tiny droplets of contaminated water, called aerosols. Santé publique France describes transmission between people as exceptional. The circumstances of exposure to water are therefore important information for the investigation.

The bacteria can multiply in certain installations containing water, including hot-water systems, cooling towers and whirlpool baths. The professional seeks to understand the places and circumstances of exposure. Visiting an installation does not establish either that it was contaminated or that the person has an infection.

Compatible symptoms need prompt medical assessment and, if the disease is suspected, laboratory confirmation. Call 15 or 112 immediately for breathlessness that prevents someone from finishing sentences, blue lips or confusion with breathing difficulty. Recent breathlessness without respiratory distress requires medical advice the same day; the investigation must not delay care.

Doctors or laboratory professionals report diagnosed cases to the regional health agency, known in France as the ARS. The agency may interview the patient or people close to them to identify risk exposures and seek other linked cases. This process complements medical care and contributes to disease surveillance.

The investigation looks, in particular, at whether several people may have been exposed to the same source. It can include a place visited while travelling. The responsible teams validate the information and decide on control and prevention measures when needed. The patient’s role is to describe actual exposures to those conducting the investigation.

When speaking with the doctor or the ARS, describe the places visited, the dates and the water installations you remember. Ask what other information would help and what medical follow-up is planned. These details help trace a possible exposure; they do not let you identify a location yourself as the source of infection.
