General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
If back pain extends down a leg with loss of strength, numbness between the legs, difficulty passing urine, urine leakage or loss of bowel control, seek urgent medical assessment.
Back pain on one side accompanied by fever may also have a cause other than a muscle problem. See a doctor promptly the same day to have these symptoms assessed.
If your doctor confirms common low back pain, gradually resume walking and usual activities without pushing yourself. Prolonged bed rest is not recommended in this situation.
Describe the demands of your job: lifting, awkward positions, repeated movements and the work environment. This helps identify suitable conditions for continuing or returning to work.
Discuss possible adjustments with your occupational physician. During sick leave, a pre-return appointment can help prepare your return; you do not always need to wait until all pain has gone.
Contact your doctor again if pain persists and severely limits daily activities, or gets worse, especially at night. Also report any associated unintentional weight loss.
