Cleaning a machine: why does stopping it not complete preparation?

Cleaning and clearing blockages also involve machine energy hazards. Clarify the procedure and the limits of your task before intervening.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A stopped machine may still be dangerous during cleaning or blockage removal. INRS puts control of energy at the centre of preparations for these tasks.

The hazards are not only electrical: moving parts and pneumatic or hydraulic energy can also be involved. Describe the exact task to the person responsible.

Ask for the machine’s specific procedure, based on the manufacturer’s instructions. Energy isolation procedures aim to keep the equipment without energy throughout the intervention.

Clarify who does what and whether other work is planned at the same time. Insufficient preparation or poor coordination can introduce additional hazards.

After a prolonged shutdown, restarting requires assessment of the actual condition, including intervening work, energy and fluids. Do not assume conditions match the last use.

Restarting also includes checking guards and safety devices. Clarify who is responsible and which checks are planned before production resumes on the equipment.
