Moving parcels at work: what should change alongside lifting technique?

Weight, frequency, distance and working height: prepare a handling assessment with your employer that goes beyond technique alone.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

When moving parcels regularly, prevention involves more than a learned lifting technique. The employer needs to assess the working situation and the physical demands that accumulate.

Describe the loads, how often you move them and the distances involved. INRS recommends reducing these demands and mechanising handling operations wherever possible.

Pickup and placement height also matter. Workstation design should allow handling with more suitable postures and enough space to carry out the task.

For supermarket shelf stocking, Assurance Maladie gives examples including stocking tables and constant-level trolleys. Selecting an aid requires assessment of the actual workstation and task.

Organisation also needs review: available time, task rotation and breaks. Alternating two tasks will not solve the problem if their physical demands simply accumulate.

Training and information accompany these adaptations. Agree with your supervisor which aid or change will be tried, the instructions needed and which difficulties to report after use.
