Horse chestnuts from the horse-chestnut tree are toxic. Marrons glacés and crème de marrons are made from edible sweet chestnuts.
The word “marron” therefore cannot establish whether a collected fruit is edible. Do not taste an unidentified fruit.
Anses describes a sweet-chestnut husk as brown with long spines. A horse-chestnut husk is green with short, widely spaced spikes.
Also observe the leaves and tree. Collection locations provide clues, but finding a fruit in a park does not make it edible.
If poisoning occurs, keep meal remains or a photograph of the collection to help identification. Calling for help and receiving care take priority.
