General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
A cough or runny nose can spread a virus to people around you. French Health Insurance recommends a mask when symptoms are present, particularly in busy indoor spaces, healthcare settings or around someone vulnerable.
A mask is not a reason to keep a visit that can be postponed. When you have a viral infection, limiting contact, staying at home and postponing visits to someone in hospital or an older person are also official precautions.
With a disposable mask, cover your nose, mouth and chin. Fit its upper edge over your nose and avoid pulling it down to speak. It should stay in place; handle it as little as possible while wearing it.
Ameli advises changing a disposable mask every four hours or when it becomes wet. Dispose of it after use and clean your hands after removing it. Do not reuse a disposable mask kept at the bottom of a pocket.
Ventilation and fewer close contacts complement this precaution. A mask reduces transmission risk without removing it; it cannot identify the virus or establish that someone is no longer contagious.
Before visiting the pharmacy with symptoms, prepare your question and useful information about your circumstances. A current illness needs advice from a professional, separately from a prevention appointment.
