The inverted black triangle identifies closer monitoring. Understand this symbol, monitoring of all medicines and the role of suspected side effects.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

An inverted black triangle may appear in the leaflet with a sentence indicating additional monitoring. The symbol identifies medicines followed more closely after they reach the market.

Closer monitoring is used particularly when less information is available, for example for a new medicine. The triangle alone does not mean that the medicine is more dangerous.

Clinical trials study limited numbers of people under controlled conditions for a defined period. Routine use then involves a more varied population; some uncommon effects can become apparent in that setting.

All medicines continue to be monitored after marketing. Continuing surveillance informs the balance between benefits and risks; the triangle indicates additional follow-up within this system.

The leaflet encourages reporting suspected side effects, particularly during additional monitoring. ANSM provides a direct reporting pathway for patients; find the instructions on its official page for patients and users.

If the symbol worries you, keep the leaflet and ask your doctor or pharmacist what it means for that medicine. Also ask about treatment instructions and the planned response to a side effect.
