General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Sorting your medicine cupboard can identify expired medicines and those no longer used after a course of treatment. French Health Insurance advises returning them to a pharmacy and avoiding excessive stocks. If you are unsure about a medicine still in use, ask for advice before setting it aside.

In France, individuals can return unused medicines to a pharmacy, including one that did not dispense them. The French Order of Pharmacists confirms that collection is free. It covers medicines for human use, prescribed or bought without a prescription, whether expired or still within their expiry date.

Separate cardboard boxes and leaflets for paper and cardboard recycling. Keep tablets in their blister packs and medicines in the packaging that holds the product itself. Leave liquids in their original bottles: do not pour syrup or drops down the sink simply to recycle the glass.

Buying something at a pharmacy does not make it a medicine. Food supplements, cosmetics, veterinary products and medical devices do not belong in this collection. Used needles and syringes follow a separate waste route. If unsure, check the appropriate route before mixing different products together.

Medicines returned by individuals go for safe disposal. Recycling does not mean distributing them to other patients or sending them abroad. The Order’s reminder dated 30 April 2026 also rules out humanitarian reuse of these household returns.

Regular checks help avoid waiting until you have a full bag. Read expiry dates and the leaflet’s storage or disposal instructions before separating the leaflets from the products. Sorting prepares unused products for return; discuss questions about your treatment with a healthcare professional.

You can also note prevention questions for a future discussion about your health habits. If you are aged 18–25, 45–50, 60–65 or 70–75, our Mon bilan prévention page explains the appointment and how to prepare. Returning medicines is a separate step from attending that appointment.
