General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Optic neuritis is inflammation of the nerve carrying visual information. Several different conditions can cause it.

Vision may deteriorate over hours or days, with pain behind the eye, faded colours or a visual patch.

These symptoms can worsen quickly: seek urgent medical assessment instead of waiting for a routine check.

Eye assessment examines vision, visual fields and sometimes OCT. MRI assesses the optic nerve and brain.

Blood tests and sometimes lumbar puncture investigate the cause. Optic neuritis does not automatically mean multiple sclerosis.

Treatment depends on the cause. Ask whether follow-up is also needed to prevent another neurological episode.
