General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Lumps or abscesses that return in the armpits or under the breasts need examination, even if they eventually drain.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is among the conditions to distinguish from boils. Some lesions in skin folds can leave scars.

A medical examination is needed to distinguish these conditions. An early abscess can be difficult to recognise from appearance alone.

Do not puncture a lesion assuming it is a boil. Describe the recurrences, affected sites and scars to your doctor.

An abscess with fever needs same-day medical review. With fever, chills and worsening general health, call 15 or 112 in France.

At the appointment, ask whether recurrences suggest hidradenitis suppurativa and what to do during the next flare. Clarify whom to contact again.
