General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
A stye is an infection at the root of an eyelash. Another eyelid lump may have a different cause, such as an inflamed chalazion. Appearance alone does not allow readers to confirm the cause themselves.
Do not pierce or squeeze the lump: handling a stye can spread infection. Avoid rubbing the eyelid and wash your hands before providing care.
For a stye, Assurance Maladie describes cleaning with sterile single-use saline and using a clean warm compress on the closed eye. A compress that is too hot can burn, especially in a child.
Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the problem has resolved. Do not restart eye drops or an ophthalmic antibiotic without medical advice: a doctor decides whether local treatment is needed.
Very severe pain, a markedly swollen eyelid, fever or blurred vision require prompt medical assessment. Repeated episodes, diabetes, immune deficiency or persistence beyond two weeks despite care also require consultation.
To prepare the discussion, describe when it started, how it has changed and any previous episodes, and mention contact lenses. Mon bilan prévention can address health habits at eligible ages; it does not replace examination of a worsening eyelid.
