General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

If your bonded retainer wire comes loose and hurts you, tell your orthodontist: they can assess the problem and may arrange urgent care to relieve the pain.

After teeth have been moved, a retainer helps preserve the result. The bone around the teeth still needs several months to stabilise, so removal of braces does not necessarily end care.

A retainer may be fixed, with a wire bonded on the tongue side, or removable, such as a plate or clear tray. Ask your orthodontist which device you have and how to check its condition.

A removable tray or plate may be worn during the day or at night according to individual instructions. Clarify your own wearing schedule and intended duration before changing your routine.

Retention time varies: Ameli describes one to two years in many cases, sometimes longer or lifelong. Ask your professional about the follow-up needed in your situation rather than choosing a stopping date yourself.

Cleaning your teeth and attending checks remain important. Ask to be shown how to clean around your device and whom to contact about a loose wire or a problematic removable retainer.
