Prescribed pulse oximeter: why is a reading not enough to reassure you?

Identify the screen values, understand misleading readings and report symptoms as part of your prescribed follow-up.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

In France, call 15 or 112 immediately if breathing difficulty prevents you from finishing sentences or comes with bluish lips or changes in alertness. New breathlessness without signs of respiratory distress requires medical assessment the same day, whatever the oximeter displays.

Ask to be shown which value is your pulse and which is oxygen saturation, or SpO2. They provide different information. To use the device already prescribed for you, refer to its instructions and the explanations given as part of your care.

Cold hands, nail polish or false nails may produce falsely low values. Excessive movement or strong ambient light may make the reading imprecise. Tell the professional overseeing your care about the conditions of an unusual reading.

A reading may appear normal while oxygen levels in arterial blood are low. The HAS specifically highlights this risk for people with black or brown skin. Respiratory symptoms therefore remain important to report even when the screen seems reassuring.

In the record arranged for your follow-up, include observed values and symptoms together. Ask your doctor when to get back in touch and whom to contact. The record supports that assessment; it does not allow you to decide on treatment yourself.

The HAS document describing these technical limits dates from April 2021. Its measurement schedules and thresholds concerned a particular Covid follow-up protocol. Your measurement and contact instructions remain those of your prescribed care; clarify them with your doctor.
