General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

If you are unsure whether pinworms are present, or symptoms persist despite treatment and the measures taken, consult the family doctor. When small worms have been seen, a pharmacist can advise on care and refer to a doctor if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Pinworms spread when their eggs are swallowed, including from hands, food or objects. Eggs laid around the anus, mainly at night, cause scratching that contaminates the hands and encourages reinfection. The eggs can survive outside the body for up to two weeks.

With pinworms, keep the child’s nails short and brush them daily; avoid scratching around the anus. Every family member should wash their hands after using the toilet and before each meal. These actions target the transfer of eggs from hands to mouth.

Remove household dust with a vacuum cleaner and clean washable surfaces. Clothing and bedding may carry eggs: cleaning the home complements hand and nail hygiene. These measures accompany care for the infestation.

Change clothes and bed linen on the day of treatment, then change underwear and nightclothes regularly. Ameli recommends washing all laundry that may have been contaminated at 60 °C. This timing aims to limit further infection from the eggs.

To limit spread, Ameli calls for simultaneous treatment of all close contacts and members of the communal setting. Ask the professional supporting care to clarify who is concerned and the instructions. Coordinating treatment and hygiene measures should go together.
