General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A small wound can allow bacteria into a finger. Pain beside a nail needs assessment rather than a diagnosis made at home.

Avoid biting nails or pulling off loose skin. These injuries give bacteria an entry point; do not chew the cuticles.

Wear protective gloves for gardening or DIY. For a manicure, use suitable instruments cleaned with alcohol to avoid injuring your fingers.

An early inflammatory finger infection needs medical assessment within 48 hours. Throbbing pain or pain preventing sleep requires immediate medical advice.

Seek immediate advice also with diabetes, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, recurrent nail infections or tetanus vaccination that is not up to date.

Follow prescribed care and seek reassessment if there is no improvement within 48 hours. Avoid self-treating a finger infection with NSAIDs.
