Parkinson’s: when might deep brain stimulation be discussed?

When medicines do not control movement well, a specialist team may discuss stimulation according to your circumstances.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

In some forms of Parkinson’s, medicines no longer control movement sufficiently and quality of life is affected. A procedure may then be discussed after specialist assessment.

Deep brain stimulation requires electrodes to be implanted in deep brain regions involved in movement. They are connected to a device placed under the skin.

The device sends electrical impulses and can reduce some motor fluctuations and involuntary movements. The team explains the expected benefit for your particular symptoms.

This procedure is an option for some people, not an automatic step for everyone with Parkinson’s. The doctor weighs health, difficulties and other treatment possibilities.

Before deciding, ask about assessment, implantation, follow-up, risks and limits of the result. Write down questions with someone close to you if you wish.

Continue medicines at their prescribed times during the discussion. Do not change them yourself: ask the neurologist how care will be coordinated if stimulation is chosen.
