After being outdoors or gardening, check your skin and clothing, then check again the next day: a small tick can easily go unnoticed.
Remove an attached tick promptly with a tick remover, without applying a product to it first. Disinfect the affected skin after removing the tick.
After incomplete removal, ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice instead of trying again to extract the remaining fragment.
Watch the area for four weeks. A small immediate red patch does not prove infection; a patch that spreads should be shown to a doctor.
Photograph and measure any lesion daily. These observations help you describe its changes to your doctor.
Also seek medical advice for unexplained fever, pain or tiredness. Take particular care during pregnancy or if you are immunocompromised, and ask for advice.
