Bronchitis or pneumonia: why has the doctor requested a chest X-ray?

The clinical examination guides the need for imaging. Understand why a cough does not always lead to a chest X-ray.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

The doctor first asks about your symptoms and medical history, examines you and listens to your lungs. A chest image is requested to answer a question raised by that assessment. A cough, even one that brings up mucus, does not allow you to decide on your own that you have pneumonia.

For the uncomplicated acute bronchitis described by Assurance Maladie, an X-ray and further investigations are not needed at that stage. A productive cough or pus-like mucus does not establish a secondary bacterial infection. If the doctor suspects bacterial pneumonia, a chest X-ray may then be requested.

When pneumonia is suspected, an X-ray can show a focus of infection or an infiltrate in the lungs and help confirm the diagnosis. The type of imaging depends on the situation: Assurance Maladie also describes chest ultrasound in children. Every patient therefore does not automatically receive the same examination.

Call 15 or 112 immediately for breathing difficulty that prevents someone from finishing sentences, blue lips, or confusion with breathlessness. Recent breathlessness without respiratory distress requires a medical consultation the same day. A high fever with muscle or abdominal pain, or new chest pain when breathing, also requires prompt medical advice.

Changes in symptoms can change the investigations needed. Explain whether the cough is persisting, a respiratory illness is getting worse rather than improving, or other symptoms have appeared. The doctor may look for another condition or request further tests. New symptoms matter when reassessing a decision made at the start of the cough.

At the end of the consultation, ask what question the image is intended to answer, or why it is not useful at this stage. Clarify how the result will be explained and when to contact the doctor again if your condition worsens. Medical assessment and follow-up take priority over prevention or seeking imaging yourself.
