General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Before an outdoor activity, check the air-quality bulletin for the area where it is planned. Check its date and the area covered. Assurance Maladie recommends paying attention to pollution bulletins and adapting activity to the environment.

Air pollution also affects rural areas. Agricultural or heating emissions can matter, and pollutants can travel long distances. Being far from a large city therefore does not remove the need to check information for the area.

Outdoor activity can increase exposure, particularly because breathing ventilation increases. Sensitivity varies between people; certain respiratory or cardiovascular conditions increase vulnerability. Read the recommendations in the light of your circumstances.

The authorities distinguish an information and recommendation threshold, relating to short-term risk for particularly sensitive groups, from an alert threshold, relating to risk for the population as a whole. These levels guide local recommendations and measures.

During a pollution episode, locally issued health recommendations can be found on the regional health agency’s website, the ARS in France. Look for those that apply to the date, place and activity planned. An old bulletin does not describe the current situation.

For everyday activity, Assurance Maladie advises avoiding exercise near major roads. If your health requires precautions, ask the doctor how to adapt the planned activity to the health recommendations. The bulletin describes the environment; medical follow-up provides your personal instructions.
