General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A school message about head lice is a reason to check the hair, even without itching. Having head lice does not mean poor hygiene.

Under good lighting, inspect each section of hair, especially the nape and behind the ears. A fine comb on wet hair helps the search.

White particles do not always settle what you are seeing. If you are unsure, seek medical advice before starting a head lice treatment.

If lice are found, check close contacts. Only people with an infestation should be treated; head lice products should not be used to prevent infestation.

Inform the school or nursery. Head lice alone do not require exclusion, but skin lesions complicated by impetigo can change this rule.

Tie back long hair and avoid sharing hats, scarves or brushes. When treatment is needed, clarify its precautions and follow the product instructions carefully.
