General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A humidifier is one possible accessory for a continuous positive airway pressure device, or CPAP. The doctor and supplier help choose suitable equipment. If your device has one, find the device and water chamber references so you can ask for the correct instructions.

The humidifier adds moisture to the air delivered by CPAP. Its water chamber needs maintenance as described in the equipment instructions. Obtain the manual for your device and ask for an explanation of the tasks you will need to carry out.

The March 2026 HAS report repeats ANSM guidance on water, in order of preference: sterile water, distilled water for medical use, then boiled water cooled to room temperature. Demineralised water intended for household appliances is excluded.

When buying water, check the intended use shown on the label with the supplier. Demineralised water for household use is different from the distilled water for medical use cited by the HAS. Clarify which option applies to your water chamber.

For maintenance, ask for a demonstration specific to your equipment: which parts to handle, how to change the water and which cleaning instructions to follow. Clarify the products and frequency specified in the manual. Maintenance follows the manufacturer's requirements.

Keep the manual and technical contact details with the device. If a maintenance task is unclear or the equipment causes a problem, contact the supplier for an explanation specific to it. You can also report difficulties to the team overseeing your treatment.
