In assessment of persistent exercise pain, the prescribed test compares muscle pressures before and after exercise.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

A doctor may prescribe muscle pressure measurements to investigate chronic compartment syndrome when exercise-related pain in a leg or forearm has lasted several months. The test forms part of a medical assessment; recognising pain yourself is not enough.

The French health authority places this examination after a stress fracture has been excluded and a clinical examination performed immediately after pain-triggering exercise. Ask your doctor what question remains to be answered in your assessment.

At Nancy University Hospital, a needle connected to a device measures pressure in the muscle compartment at rest. The procedure uses sterile precautions; local anaesthesia at the measurement site may be considered.

The team then proposes suitable exercise to reproduce the usual pain and takes further measurements after stopping. Nancy describes treadmill exercise and measurements at one and five minutes; your team will explain your own protocol.

This test can be painful because it aims to reproduce exercise-related pain. Beforehand, ask the team what to prepare and how to report pain or difficulty during the exercise.

The doctor explains the result in the context of your symptoms and other examinations; ultrasound may sometimes supplement the assessment. Ask for aftercare instructions and how to receive the report so you can discuss next steps.
