Falls at home: walk through your rooms to spot obstacles

An everyday route makes the discussion concrete. Identify one first change and any adaptations you need to ask about.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Falls often have several causes, including health, balance, medicines and surroundings. Start by considering a familiar route through your home without putting yourself at risk.

Clear walkways and tidy cables. Check that the places where you move around are well lit, paying particular attention to steps and stairs.

Remove rugs that catch your feet or choose non-slip ones. Check slippery surfaces in the bathroom as part of the same walk-through.

Keep everyday items within easy reach. Use only firmly secured supports; a towel rail is not a grab bar you can safely rely on.

Tell your doctor about falls, dizziness, walking difficulties and all your medicines. Finding an obstacle does not necessarily explain every fall.

An occupational therapist can suggest adaptations for your needs and habits. Note a specific obstacle and get advice about equipment that needs installing.
