Prostate biopsy: why combine targeted and systematic samples?

PSA or MRI alone does not confirm cancer. Discuss the samples, their risks and how results will be explained before the procedure.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

An abnormal PSA has several possible causes. Examination or MRI findings may lead to a proposed biopsy without already establishing a cancer diagnosis.

Biopsy removes prostate tissue fragments for microscopic examination. This analysis confirms whether cancer cells are present.

Systematic samples examine several regions. Targeted samples aim at a lesion seen on MRI; depending on circumstances, both approaches are combined.

HAS describes benefit from combining them for selected suspicious MRI-visible lesions. It may also detect less significant cancers requiring discussion of monitoring.

Before the procedure, ask about the route, anaesthesia, infection precautions and risks. Report all medicines to receive individual instructions without changing them yourself.

After biopsy, fever, inability to pass urine or heavy bleeding need urgent advice. Confirm the appointment to explain results and decisions depending on them.
