Psoriasis: why does assessment look beyond the area of skin plaques?

Plaque location, everyday burden and any joint pain help the doctor assess psoriasis and discuss the aims of follow-up.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Psoriasis covering a large part of the body with fever needs urgent medical assessment. During follow-up, also report a new or unusual symptom that worries you without delay, before waiting for a prevention appointment.

Psoriasis is diagnosed mainly from the appearance of lesions during medical examination. For the assessment, describe the affected sites: lesions on the palms, soles or nails can cause particular difficulties.

The visible area does not capture the whole burden. Explain what becomes difficult at work, in relationships or in usual activities. Even limited lesions can affect quality of life, and psychological support can be discussed.

Also mention joint pain, particularly in fingers or toes, even when plaques seem stable. Psoriasis can be associated with psoriatic arthritis. The doctor looks for this involvement and chooses examinations to assess it if needed.

Care decisions take account of the type of psoriasis, affected sites, extent, joint involvement and its impact. Ask which aims are being agreed for the lesions that trouble you most.

Appointments compare changes and check treatment effectiveness and tolerability. The doctor sets their timing. Note your questions and report adverse effects; do not stop prescribed treatment without discussing it with the doctor.
