Returning from a trip: how can you avoid bringing bedbugs home?

Bedbugs can travel in luggage. Checks during a stay and on returning home reduce opportunities for transport, without guaranteeing prevention.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Bedbugs can be carried in a suitcase without your knowledge. They do not live on people, and their presence is not evidence of poor cleanliness. No precaution is infallible.

At your accommodation, inspect the bedding, mattress seams and the area around the headboard. Also check the luggage rack before putting your suitcase on it.

Keep bags closed when you are not taking anything out, and keep them off the bed. Inspect the bed and furniture before putting your clothes there.

Back home, do not put suitcases on a bed or armchair. Take out your belongings and make time to inspect the bags and their contents.

If bedbugs are found on your clothes or belongings, isolate the items in a tightly sealed bag until they are treated. If you find them at your accommodation, notify the host and change room or accommodation.

Dark spots, blood on sheets, insects or shed skins help guide the search. Skin reactions vary: bumps alone do not establish the cause. Seek advice about skin lesions or a suspected infestation.
