General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

If heartburn or acid regurgitation persists, worsens despite the measures taken, or returns as soon as you stop a medicine taken on your own, see your doctor in the coming days.

Record when symptoms occur, particularly after meals or when lying down. Specify the medicines already used, their doses and how often you took them to prepare for the consultation.

Mention rapid weight loss or difficulty swallowing. If swallowing is very difficult, see a doctor the same day.

Assessment starts with a medical examination. Associated symptoms or symptoms that resist treatment may lead to a gastroenterology opinion and further tests if needed.

If a test is proposed, ask what it should clarify, including the cause or possible complications. Also clarify when symptoms and findings will be reassessed.

Worrying chest pain, particularly sudden, intense pain with breathlessness, sweating or altered consciousness, needs urgent help: call 15 or 112 immediately in France. Do not decide for yourself that it is reflux.
