I already walk: what does adding muscle strengthening mean?

Endurance and strength serve different goals. Understand resistance, progression and rest before choosing exercises.

General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

You walk regularly and also see a recommendation for muscle strengthening. This means more than adding walking minutes: recommendations distinguish endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and balance. Consider which abilities your current activities actually involve.

Strengthening makes muscles work against resistance. Assurance Maladie describes exercises using the body or an object, such as weights, dumbbells or resistance bands. Buying dumbbells or joining a gym is therefore not what defines whether an activity strengthens muscles.

For adults, Assurance Maladie recommends muscle strengthening once or twice a week. It distinguishes this from endurance and flexibility exercises, with flexibility recommended two or three times a week. These general guides do not specify the load, individual exercises or number of repetitions suitable for each person.

When starting an activity, Assurance Maladie recommends beginning gently at a suitable level, then gradually increasing duration or intensity. Ask for a demonstration if you do not know how to perform a movement. Prepare questions about suitable adjustments rather than choosing a heavy load on your own.

For muscle strengthening, Assurance Maladie advises choosing non-consecutive days where possible. Look at activities already planned in your week and the time available between sessions. This guide is not an individual programme: ask how to arrange practice and recovery for your circumstances.

Before choosing a practice, describe what you already do, the equipment available and any limitations. If you have a medical condition or physical difficulty, have a qualified professional adapt the choice. Keep your usual walks as one part of your overall activity.
