General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.

Reptiles, including turtles and snakes, can carry Salmonella. Mention their presence at home when a young child is ill.

Transmission does not require the baby to touch the animal. Santé publique France describes indirect contamination through hands, clothing or the environment.

Wash your hands with soap after contact with the animal. This is additional to washing before preparing food.

Prevent contact between the reptile and food preparation areas. Kitchen hygiene therefore involves more than what is in the fridge.

Santé publique France advises parents of babies and young children, and people with weakened immunity, to avoid these pets.

Serious infections have occurred in young children. If digestive symptoms or fever develop, tell the doctor about the reptile and possible contacts.
