General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Vaginal bleeding after established menopause requires a prompt medical appointment, even when it seems slight. Do not wait for your next cervical screening to report it.
Causes vary: hormone treatment may contribute, but an abnormality of the uterine lining, called the endometrium, also needs consideration. Bleeding alone cannot establish the cause.
For the appointment, record how long periods have stopped, when bleeding began, its duration and amount. Mention intercourse, pain, hormone treatment and medicines that can promote bleeding.
The professional examines you and selects investigations. A pelvic ultrasound can assess the uterus and its lining; it is not a diagnosis to interpret on your own.
Depending on findings, hysteroscopy and endometrial sampling may be proposed. For heavy bleeding with faintness or marked weakness, or bleeding with fever, seek urgent care or call 15 in France.
At the appointment, ask what each examination is looking for, who will explain the results and when. If sampling is planned, clarify the procedure and the follow-up appointment for deciding what happens next.
