Heart scintigraphy: why stress images and sometimes resting images?

Myocardial scintigraphy uses a radioactive tracer injected into a vein and a gamma camera to assess blood supply to the heart muscle. It provides images of its function; it is more than the electrical recording obtained during an exercise ECG.

Images may be obtained after exercise or supervised drug stimulation. A resting series may complete the examination. Nancy University Hospital explains that this second part is not always needed: confirm the protocol and total time required, beyond the imaging period alone.

Request written instructions about meals, caffeine and medicines. Preparation depends on the protocol: do not copy instructions for scintigraphy of another organ or stop treatment yourself. If your appointment letter leaves anything unclear, have the service resolve it before the examination.

Report possible pregnancy or breastfeeding during preparation. The injected tracer requires radiation protection precautions; ask which apply after discharge, particularly for prolonged contact with young children and pregnant women. Before the appointment, new or severe chest pain, or chest pain with faintness or nausea, warrants calling 15 or 112 immediately in France. An already scheduled scintigraphy examination must not delay this urgent help.

Keep the report and images for the prescribing doctor. Ask the nuclear medicine doctor what the images show and whether a resting series was needed, then ask the prescriber what the results change in your assessment. The presence or absence of a second series cannot be interpreted on its own.
