General information, not an individual diagnosis. Ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about your situation.
Would you like another doctor to assess a proposed course of care? First state the question you want clarified: understanding the proposal, exploring another possibility or resolving uncertainty. This gives the second opinion a clear purpose.
France’s Haute Autorité de santé describes medical information as a dialogue that helps you make decisions. It recommends that the professional suggest seeking a second opinion when necessary. You can discuss this possibility with the doctor following your care.
Prepare records relevant to your question: clinical reports, test results, prescriptions and letters between professionals. Different doctors or institutions may hold them; ask which documents to provide to the doctor giving the opinion.
If a document is missing, request it from the professional or institution holding it. Mon espace santé may contain shared documents but does not replace their medical records. Identify any documents you have not yet obtained.
Before waiting for the second opinion, ask the doctor following your care about the urgency of the decision, planned follow-up and instructions during that time. Bring the explanations already given and the questions that remain open.
After the discussion, restate what this second opinion adds to your original question. Ask how useful information will reach the doctor responsible for your follow-up and whom to discuss the next decisions about your care with.
